What is Mesothelioma ?

Mesothelioma is the cancer of the mesothelium, a membrane that covers and protects the majority of the internal organs. The disease is a result of development and multiplication of abnormal cells of the mesothelium. Like in other cancers, abnormal cells eventually invade and damage the nearby tissues, and can spread in other parts of the body via circulatory or lymphatic systems. Spread of cancer cell in other parts of the body is commonly referred as metastasis.

There are five known types of mesothelioma - four malignant and one benign which are classified according to the affected area: pleural mesothelioma (the lining of the lungs), peritoneal mesothelioma (the lining of abdominal cavity), pericardial mesothelioma (the lining of the heat), testicular mesothelioma (the membrane of internal reproductive organs), and benign mesothelioma which is not carcinogen and most commonly develops in the pleura. Most common are pleural and peritoneal mesothelioma.

The majority of people who are affected by mesothelioma - by some estimations over 80% have been exposed to asbestos, a natural occurring mineral with thin fibrous crystals. Because of its properties such resistance to heat, electricity and chemical damage, asbestos has been widely used in many industries in the 20th century, while its use and manufacture reached the peak in the 1970's when it become clear that it causes cancer. Since mesothelioma can develop to five decades after the exposure to asbestos in higher risk for developing mesothelioma are older men who worked with asbestos products for a longer period. However, mesothelioma can occur also in people who were exposed to asbestos only for a short period, while all workers who were heavily exposed to asbestos and its products do not develop mesothelioma or other asbestos related diseases.
