What is Mesothelioma ?
Mesothelioma is the cancer of the mesothelium, a membrane that covers and protects the majority of the internal organs. The disease is a result of development and multiplication of abnormal cells of the mesothelium. Like in other cancers, abnormal cells eventually invade and damage the nearby tissues, and can spread in other parts of the body via circulatory or lymphatic systems. Spread of cancer cell in other parts of the body is commonly referred as metastasis.
There are five known types of mesothelioma - four malignant and one benign which are classified according to the affected area: pleural mesothelioma (the lining of the lungs), peritoneal mesothelioma (the lining of abdominal cavity), pericardial mesothelioma (the lining of the heat), testicular mesothelioma (the membrane of internal reproductive organs), and benign mesothelioma which is not carcinogen and most commonly develops in the pleura.
